THE THREE BROTHERS
William, Alfred and Anthony ran together every day. They did not run for glory, for fame, nor performance. When asked why they ran, they generally answered that they run because they love to travel and to share the experience.
One day, they were part of a race because at the pressed request from their parents who absolutely wanted to see their performance at a competitive level after all that time they spent training together.
Since the start of the race until the end they stayed together. They did not see the race in the full sense of the term but just like they always did, they ran together to enjoy the experience. Despite that, they crossed the finish line before anyone else – that right – they had just won without really noticing it! Everyone was shocked to learn that some race amateurs without any real racing experience had just won such a competitive race. Other soon realized the enormous potential of these runners, especially that of the younger one: William, who had a potentially longer professional running career. So much so that they continued to run and sure enough they continued to outperform on every single one of the races the trio went. Then one day, what was going to inevitably happen, happened; a cunning and ingenious sponsor approached young William, and made him an offer so hard to resist that anyone else wouldn’t have been able to say no, but the young William simply declined it.
“It’s out of the question that I run without my brothers”, he firmly replied.
But the sponsor wouldn’t stop there. He devised another plan to which he had a secret weapon.
On their next race the sponsor made a gift to William’s two brothers, a complete outfit that included the latest Shirt as well as the Shorts to which William’s surprise felt like a betrayal, and thus decided not to follow them. The results weren’t great, the young William finished last and the other two in the middle. Once again the sly sponsor daze the other two with a similar ruse.
When he approached William with the same contract, this last one didn’t hesitate to answer saying he didn’t have anything else to loose.
Meanwhile several races went by. William didn’t perform like he used to. And come the big race day of the season, he was left looking up at the podium. During the award ceremony, he realized that the three finalists standing over him were also brothers without any real racing experience. It was only then that our young runner came to his senses. One year ago, he had won the same way, alongside his brothers without a worry in the world about performance or ego. Going forward from that day he never ran without his brothers.
