In 4 days, the third edition of the HALF MARATHON DES SABLES in Fuerteventura will start.
But what is HMDS? An adventure of 4 days of race and 3 stages for 120 km to cover in the desert of the island of Fuerteventura.
The WAA team will be present on this edition with 7 athletes at the start! As a reminder, last year, the team won the team trial, so what about this year...
They come from all over the world and are looking forward to be together and participating in this incredible race. Here are a few words about each of them.
EVA LLINAS, 35 YEARS OLD, SPANISH, bib 17
She has already run the HMDS in Fuerteventura and Peru, but also the MDS in Morocco and Peru! So she is a specialist and she has a little advice for you: the weight of the backpack being the hardest to support, you should only take the essentials with you and train before the race with it.
"I love this race, travelling to an unknown place, living with strangers, searching for the limit of suffering and self-sufficiency. The satisfaction of finishing the race is much greater than any pain you can feel while you are there."
JULIA SAFRONOVA, 35 YEARS OLD, ESTONIAN, bib 22
Having participated in the HMDS Peru with a teammate last year, she enjoyed the experience so much that she wants to participate again but alone. She wants to discover the island but above all to participate in this adventure as much as she can because health problems may prevent her from participating in it in a few years.
Having participated in the HMDS Peru with a teammate last year, Julia enjoyed the experience so much that she wants to participate again but alone. As an adventurous woman and wanting to enjoy life to the fullest, she will take the start of the HMDS in Fuerteventura in 4 days. Health problems may prevent her from doing this type of race in a few years, so this is the opportunity...
"It is a great experience. I really liked to live in a tent and enjoyed all camp routines. Very different lifestyle to the city life. Almost like a mental retreat, with only running on your mind, food and rest.”
DAMIEN DOUVRY, 39 YEARS OLD, FRENCH, bib 39
Finisher of the last two editions of the MDS in Morocco, he had to abandon the HMDS Fuerteventura last year due to an injury. His goal is obviously to take revenge and bring back the HMDS finisher medal. Between cycling, elliptical and long races, he has prepared himself as well as he can...
"I like the concept of stage races, it gives a little taste of adventure with food autonomy for 4 days, but it also makes it possible to be dazzled by the landscape."
HEIDI SVARTANGEN, 42 YEARS OLD, NORWAY, bib 19
HMDS Peru was the most beautiful adventure she has ever had, so she now wants to discover the island of Fuerteventura. Passionate about running and constantly in search of novelty, encounters and adventure, she prefers multi-day races, so it’s also for this reason that she wanted to participate to the HMDS Fuerteventura.
"I want every race to be an adventure, that's always my goal. Even so that on my right ankle I have tattooed the phrase: it's never about the destination, it's all about the adventure.”
CLÉMENCE DESROZES, 34 YEARS OLD, FRENCH, bib 24
Novice in this type of race, she has never participated in the HMDS, nor in any race so long and self-sufficient in food. She wants to refocus on herself, have fun and share with other runners.
"There's this sentence that I like very much and that I will think about regularly during the race: "the pain is temporary, the pride is eternal"."
DIEGO DEL PRADO, 39 YEARS OLD, ARGENTINA, bib 23
He has already participated in the HMDS, but in Peru last year, and he loved being isolated for 4 days, being self-sufficient in food, the atmosphere at the bivouac, the adventure in general! His objective is therefore to discover a new surface and to perform better than in Peru....
"I'm looking forward to it! I'm counting off the days!!"
ALINE GOBERT, 23 YEARS OLD, BELGIUM, bib 21
Having run her first marathon only 10 months ago, Aline is also a novice in this type of race. She wants to enjoy the adventure to the maximum and not to walk too much, preferring to run. She prepared as best as she could by running 630 km in 3 months with a marathon in the sand, UltraBag 20L on her back.
"I apprehend and I can't wait at the same time! Food self-sufficiency means carrying all our food, and as a novice in this type of race, I am concerned that I may not have planned enough food or forgotten some essential things. But I look forward to this incredible adventure and to enjoy the experience."
We wish them good luck, and above all to enjoy this extraordinary adventure!
